conference is hosted by the >> Institute of History at the
University of Vienna and the >>
Historical Studies Library. Both are housed in the university
main building (the Hauptgebäude),
built in a neo-renaissance style by Heinrich von Ferstel between 1877 and
1884 and located directly at the
famous Ringstraße, a circular boulevard surrounding Vienna‘s old city. In the
immediate vicinity conference participants can find other famous buildings
like the Rathaus (Town Hall), the Burgtheater, the Bundeskanzleramt (see
below), the >>
Austrian State Archives, as well as the Hofburg (Imperial
Court) on the Heldenplatz. The Hofburg houses the >> Austrian
National Library with its invaluable historical repositories
such as incunabula and a unique collection of historical globes. The
University’s courtyard (Arkadenhof) and beautiful parks alike are ideal for
relaxation and recreation. Other famous attractions, such as the Museum of
Natural History, the State Opera, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or numerous
Viennese coffee houses, are within easy walking distance. Last but not least,
the >> Vienna
University Library is also located in the university main
building. Founded in 1365, it is Austria’s largest library (over 7 million
items) and will be accessible during your visit. Arkadenhof

foyer, immediately outside the Historical Studies Library during the
scheduled breaks. In addition, the university main building has several
cafeterias and there are numerous restaurants nearby, many of them quite
affordable. Wireless internet access will be provided for
conference-participants. The venue is equipped for people with special needs. Left:

place in the Kongresssaal (Congress Hall) of the Palais der Geheimen
Hofkanzlei (palace of the Secret Court Chancellery), now Austria’s Federal
Chancellery. This all is scheduled for 18 September 2014, exactly 200 years
after the opening of the historic Congress of Vienna and in the original
imperial premises in Vienna’s historic city centre, ideal for conveying the
impression of early 19th century Vienna. Federal

building is located on the Ballhausplatz, meaning “square of the house of
ball game”. The original “house of ball game” once comprised a court for a
famous ball game comparable to tennis or badminton and was established in
1520. The Bundeskanzleramt building was designed by the Genovese architect
Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and completed in 1721. Since then it has served
as headquarter of the Austrian chancellery. In the early 19th century,
Metternich – in his function as Foreign Minister and husband of Maria
Eleonore von Kaunitz – lived here together with his family and servants
transforming this official building also into a residential one. During the
Congress of Vienna the building became the centre of global politics. Secret
